Schoolteacher: A Sociological Inquiry should, at long last, bring to the attention of serious students of education the relatively unheralded work of Dan C. Lortie who, in this reviewer's judgment, has conducted some of the most trenchant, unique, and helpful research ever done on the profession of teaching and the dynamics of the school as an organization.1 The text is packed with new concepts, insights, and ideas, and has the potential to be of concrete aid to groups ranging from professors to boards of education, teachers, administrators and supervisors.
