I have just been reading C. P. Snow and F. E. Leavis and Lionel Trilling's essay on "The Leavis-Snow Controversy." The controversy is about the primacy of the humanities versus the natural sciences in education (both Snow and Leavis ignore, with that marvelous British snobbery, the social sciences). Trilling calls to our attention that the controversy did not begin in 1959 when C. P. Snow gave the Rede Lecture at Cambridge, "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution," nor did it begin when Dr. Leavis, in a lecture, "launched an attack of unexampled ferocity upon the doctrine and the author of The Two Cultures," to quote Trilling. Rather, the controversy is Victorian. On October 1, 1880, Thomas Henry Huxley delivered the address for the opening of Sir Josiah Mason's Science College (later the University of Birmingham). Huxley supported Mason's intent that "literary instruction" not be a part of the curriculum,... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
