As foreign-language sermons, religious festivals and even St. Patrick's, Columbus and Pulaski Day parades demonstrate, ethnic variety prevails in American Catholicism. Indeed, the ethnic factor is to American Catholicism what the denominational factor is to American Protestantism, or the nationality factor to American Judaism. As obvious as this has been to various social commentators on the "church of immigrants," it has been largely ignored by sociological researchers. Observations have been plentiful, data limited. Thus Professor Harold J. Abramson has made a worthwhile contribution by extracting the ethnic variable from a 1963-1964 survey of Catholics conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. His secondary analysis demonstrates that ethnicity is alive and persistent in American Catholicism and that the exaggerated myth of the melting pot has no more validity there than in the rest of American society.
