Chapter 12. A Research Agenda for Teacher Education by Kenneth M. Zeichner What this Chapter Promises This chapter promises to propose a research agenda that “…seeks to overcome some of the major limitations in the existing research and build on promising lines of work” (p. 737). It opens with a rehearsal of the charge to the panel. Given the weak research record documented in the previous chapters, the principal charge to the panel was “…to make sense of what the research did and did not say about teacher education and to craft a new research agenda that might begin to answer some of the most important, but previously unanswered questions” (p. ix). In a jointly authored preface to the volume, Felice Levine, Executive Director of AERA and Carl Grant, Chair of the AERA Publications Committee (2005-2007) write that “[i]t is a tremendous advantage for policy makers and scholars to have a volume that...
