Chapter 3. Teachers’ Characteristics: Research on the Demographic Profile by Karen Zumwalt and Elizabeth Craig What this chapter promises The authors promise to describe research findings that portray the demographic characteristics of “teachers who are going into teaching” (p. 111). The chapter was written to give emphasis to the impact on schoolchildren of teacher demographic variables such as gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age. The chapter also includes a research agenda for this domain–the demographic profiles of teachers. What is found in this chapter The chapter is initially organized around basic questions–Who is teaching? How are they prepared? Where do they teach? How long do they stay? Under each question are sub-headings associated with the various demographic variables: gender, race, age, etc. The last substantive section, entitled “Impact of Demographic Variables,” is followed by a summary and a research agenda.  Here are some of the highlights of the findings.
