The origin of human social behavior has long been of interest to scholars particularly in philosophy and psychology. The subtleties of human group behavior such as cohesion, altruism, sanction patterns, and symbolism in communication have been introspectively analyzed and more recently empirically examined as human social phenomena. Wilson, however, assumes the perspective of an animal behaviorist who through the lens of organic evolution and Mendelian genetics surveys human group behavior as an extension of primitive animal behavior. Much of this book on sociobiology is devoted to a scholarly discussion of animal social behavior and cannot rightly be called an interpretation of human sociobiology. There are occasional citations to philosophy, sociology, psychology, and other cognate fields of animal behavior which make this book an attractive treatise for a wide audience.
