Herbert Kohl has written an extremely important book, one which humanizes his legend in American education, and one which provides the reader with much wisdom and direction regarding the agonies and ecstasies of school/social reform throughout the sixties and the early seventies. Half the House is an autobiographical account of Kohl's struggles during the time he was producing a powerful professional literature which has since affected the lives of many educators. The three chapters of the book encompass his Harvard days, his initial teaching in a public school in New York City, and his work with Other Ways, an educational alternative located within the Berkeley public schools in California. What makes the book so impressive, however, is the author's ability to glean from his successes and failures insights which have meaning for all of us who strive to change ourselves and our projects in midlife.
