During the decade of the sixties, when the Civil Rights movement was at its height, publishers responded to the demands of blacks for a more honest and accurate portrayal of their history and culture by producing scores of textbooks and trade-books that purported to correct past errors in the treatment of blacks in these materials. Analysis of these materials, however, revealed that many of them continued to perpetuate racist and offensive stereotypes—albeit in more subtle and sophisticated form. Recast in modern mold were all the familiar, negative images: the docile, contented slave, the selfless servant who makes the ultimate sacrifice to save a master, the self-rejecting black, the superblack, and the dependent black family riddled with social pathology. Faced with that situation, African-Americans and other interested parties began to raise new demands that textbooks and tradebooks be critically examined for all evidence of racism, that librarians and teachers be trained in...
