In a book whose stated purpose is to suggest "why fairy tales are so meaningful to children in helping them cope with the psychological problems of growing up and integrating their personalities," it is reassuring to have the author admit that "the fairy tale could not have its psychological impact on the child if it were not first and foremost a work of art." And, like exclamation points dotted here and there among detailed analyses of their symbolic significance, further reassurances that the writer respects as art the stories he explicates. Under no circumstances, he insists, should a child have fairy tales explained to him in the psychological terms of the book, for "fairy tales enrich the child's life and give it an enchanted quality just because he does not quite know how the stories have worked their wonder on him."
