Lillian Breslow Rubin has successfully conveyed without bathos and without condescension the pain of working-class life in Worlds of Pain: Life in the Working-Class Family. One is reminded in reading her book of Saint Exupery's torment at seeing in the displaced of Europe a "little bit ... of Mozart murdered." Holding aside for the moment the danger of viewing only the strains and deficits of working-class families, one can ask what is the cause of this murdered potential. Ms. Rubin finds the cause in the class structure, in the adaptation to childhood deprivation and to an adult life of precarious financial stability. I am not convinced that her book is a "resounding yes" to the question of whether working-class life has an integrity of its own based on class alone.
