The work presented in this text represents six years of research on an after school science program for urban, mostly homeless children. The purpose of the work was to explore concerns of young people in poverty, describe how high-poverty urban youth construct a practice of science, and explore how science teaching practices constructed with young people in urban poverty reflect their lives, their concerns, and their practices of science. To explore these ideas the researchers use stories of the urban youth to illustrate “how their unique positions, as youth growing and learning in high-poverty, urban settings, frame their constructions of science in particularly compelling and challenging ways” (p. 5). I found the book interesting to read because of these illustrative stories about the youth’s experiences in their neighborhoods trying to create a sense of community as well as learn science. For instance, we first experience the dichotomy of science in and out of school through Kobe ’s story. Kobe struggles with helping to raise his siblings as well... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
