Connoisseurs of Deweyan philosophy will find John Dewey Reconsidered disappointing. A careful reading confirms that its major defect is in its organization. According to the editor, the book has two purposes: (1) ". . . to present Dewey's views on such topics as the theory of knowledge, interests, language and experience, the self in action, democracy and education, and philosophy of education," and (2) to present a critical evaluation of Dewey's thought with "a view of making explicit what is acceptable and unacceptable in it to contemporary thinkers." Where the volume fails is in its second purpose, although the chapter on language and experience is quite weak and irrelevant. This is so not because its articles are necessarily at odds with the book's theoretical framework, but rather because a framework in which criteria for judging what is acceptable and unacceptable is not found.
