The slimness of this volume belies its importance. The essays published in it represent the proceedings of the Conference on Applying Jewish Scholarship to Contemporary Programs of Education held in 1973. Sponsored by the Melton Research Center for Jewish Education and attended by noted scholars, educators, and lay leaders, this conference attempted to analyze the problems facing contemporary Jewish education and to offer and evaluate programs aimed at resolving the current crisis in this field. The essays in this volume, however, are of more than just parochial interest; they focus on a problem that concerns the educational community at large, that is, the translation of academic research and scholarship into effective curricula for primary and secondary schools. In his opening essay, Joseph Schwab lists five essential elements in constructing a successful curriculum: mastery of the content and skills of the discipline, knowledge of the student body, familiarity with the milieu within which...
