The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School--English, Nature-Study, Industrial Arts, Household Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education: Nature-Study

by Henry Carr Pearson - 1913

Nature-study appears upon the official program as occurring two or three times a week for the first five years of the elementary school,—the periods occupying twenty minutes in the first three grades and a half-hour in the fourth and fifth grades. But as the work is often out-doors, in the garden or campus or parks, we take advantage of fair weather and go forth as opportunity offers; or if the children are tired from other work, they go to the garden to dig or to plant or just to see "what is happening." Again some of our best work is done before school or during recess or in a five-minute impromptu lesson on some specimen brought in by an eager child who wants to know more about it.
