The study of English naturally occupies an important place in the school program. Regarding it as the most efficient means of culture at our command, we make it the " core," as Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler styles it, of our curriculum, devoting more time to it than to any other subject, and considering it the chief standard for measuring the progress and ability of our pupils. Our aim is the obvious one—to train the children to use their mother-tongue more effectively in speaking and writing, and to gain some knowledge and appreciation of its literature. In school-room practice the subject groups itself as follows: 1. Reading and Literature 2. Composition 3. Language Work and Grammar 4. Spelling
