The Present Teaching of Mathematics in Germany: Chapter VIII. The Secondary Schools of Elsass and Lothringen

by David Eugene Smith & Maurice Levine - 1912

In the first chapter Dr. Wirz describes the present organization of the higher schools in Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine). This is followed by a historical and critical survey of the development of instruction in mathematics, especially with regard to the curriculum, from the time of the French control in 1870 to the present day. The third chapter deals with the methods of instruction employed at the present time. The part that text-books play, the question of propaedeutic instruction, the use of models, and practical exercises, are all discussed. The fourth chapter is devoted to a discussion of the reform movement in Elsass-Lothringen. The author gives the opinions of various colleagues as to the use and scope of the function-concept, the introduction of the differential and integral calculus in the secondary school, the cutting down of the formal operations, the simultaneous treatment of planimetry and stereometry, geometrical drawing, the use of historical material, the instruction in the upper classes, and the final examinations. The last chapter discusses the preparation of teachers of mathematics in the higher schools.
