This is a serious book about a serious subject—television—and an argument that educators should take seriously as well. Mander begins by reminding us that we spend half of our nonsleeping and nonworking time watching television. We are the first culture to have "substituted secondary, mediated versions of experience for direct experience of the world." (Our politics, he argues, are now dominated by what makes a good media event.) Mander emphasizes the dangers of the mediated television experience, one of which he thinks is that it lays the base for an autocracy, as it separates people from personal knowledge, real comparisons, and from each other. Centralization of control is another of his arguments, in which he points out that television exists to advertise, and that television advertising is in the hands of the largest corporations, which can afford $115,000 for a thirty-second spot.
