The Leading Mathematical Features: As in the preceding grade, it is well to begin by a general review of the fundamental processes from a higher standpoint than before. Ratio and proportion are usually completed in this year, whether introduced here for the first time or not, and the applications naturally cover a broader field. Percentage is the leading topic of the year. Our Numbers: The children are now ready to consider the writing of numbers from a higher standpoint, to know something of the interesting history of the numerals they use and of the science of arithmetic that they are studying. The story of the Roman numerals, told in condensed form in the author's Handbook (p. 83) makes this subject seem more real at this time. The difference between a uniform scale, as seen in our system of money, and a varying one, as seen in the English system, should also be explained, and the advantage of the former understood. The relation between integers, the various kinds of fractions, and compound numbers, may now understandingly be taken up.
