Since World War II, advanced industrial society has been the setting for the development of a pervasive “technological consciousness,” a belief that all human social problems, including those of schooling, can be solved by scientific-technical means. What threatens to get lost in that development is the commitment to the principle of human dignity. This is the starting point of Vandenberg’s book. In what follows he argues for an educational program founded on a reaffirmation of the principle of human dignity and conducted with a proper regard for the basic human rights of liberty, equality, and fraternity. And he makes his case clearly and convincingly. Human Rights in Education is a worthy addition to the literature in educational theory. More, it is a good, useful book for classroom teachers and those intending to become teachers, for in it Vandenberg has ably succeeded in showing what these basic human ideals entail in the...
