I wish to thank Dr. Leonard Waks for helpful comments made on an earlier draft of this review. Research for this review has been supported by a Spencer fellowship granted by the National Academy of Education. As I write this, the State College School District is caught in a conflict of values similar to those included as case studies in The Ethics of Teaching by Kenneth A. Strike and Jonas F. Soltis. At issue between parents and school staff in the State College School District is the controversial sex education curriculum introduced to help students make “responsible choices based on facts relative to competing codes of conduct.“1 While this aim finds full support from the concerned parents, they vehemently oppose the means currently adopted by the school district.
