Though a truism, this characterization of the field still has a certain power for concerned observers who have watched early childhood educators balance precariously between time-honored, broadly based practice and frequently narrow concerns of research. Early childhood practice is rooted in coherent educational approaches developed over the past 150 years in response to individual and societal views of the young child. Research done in the field, however, has tended to revolve around issues originating almost exclusively in the allied fields of psychology and elementary or secondary curriculum making. Given the lack of a clear congruence between the two, many early childhood teachers have turned their backs on inquiry in favor of practice for its own sake; and many university-based early childhood educators have lost direct connection with practice in order to meet perceived research standards.
