The word is out in professional education that a new interest in ethics is upon us, but as yet there is strikingly little awareness of whence this interest comes or even of what ethics is. Surely this is a situation of intriguing confusion. It is to this confusion that this helpful volume is addressed. To many people, even those of the academic variety, ethics means etiquette, a code of systematized politeness. Professional ethics, in this understanding, would help one go about one’s work unoffensively and with acceptable decorum. For others, ethics refers to atrocities or borderline situations. An “ethics committee” in business or government would address actions of malfeasance that go beyond the pale of the tolerable, or an ethics committee in a hospital might be formed to decide whether available life-saving treatment could be withheld from a drastically deformed infant.
