A small but growing number of books has appeared in recent years on the philosophy of mind that draws inspiration from Jean Piaget’s theory and research. Briefs short but tightly packed volume is a welcome addition to their number. In the course of an intensive analysis, the reader is treated to a journey through some treacherous terrain illuminating the thought of all manner of classical and contemporary philosophers. Briefs knowledge of Piaget’s theory shows an understanding that is rare even among psychologists, and certainly rare among philosophers who write about Piaget. His descriptions of those aspects of the theory in which he has interest detail major changes in Piaget’s thought and draw on, with one important exception that I will discuss, some of the last of Piaget’s works. Brief, a Stanford-trained philosopher at the University of Quebec (Montreal), is critical of some well-known contributors to the Piagetian literature, and is... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
