To what degree is writing systematic? Can it be taught directly or only invited? Do we teach writing or only do writing in school? The Teaching of Writing is largely a collection of cautionary essays that address these questions and others. The contributors caution against overanalyzing or overtechnologizing written communication and against oversimplifying or underconceiving writing instruction. If there is a common theme across all eleven essays, it is that, after fifteen years of growth, it is time to pause, review, and plot new directions for how writing should be taught in the next fifteen years. This volume of the National Society for the Study of Education yearbook series is written primarily for concerned parents, administrators, and fellow educators “outside” the debates within the community of writing teachers and researchers.
