At the request of the Bernard van Leer Foundation of the Hague, the Harvard Graduate School of Education undertook to assess the state of scientific knowledge concerning human potential and its realization. Known as the Project on Human Potential, the study began in 1979 and lasted five years, resulting in the publication of four books. The first appeared in 1983—titled Frames of Mind, by Howard Gardner—and was followed by Israel Scheffler’s Of Human Potential, published in 1985. The publication of Human Conditions and The Cultural Transition brings the project to a successful conclusion. A synergistic enterprise, the Project on Human Potential enlisted the services of scores of scholars from many parts of the world, who represented a variety of disciplines both in the humanities and the social sciences.
