During the last quarter of a century sufficient changes in mathematics knowledge, in mathematical procedures and applications, and in the explanation of human behavior have occurred to warrant a reappraisal of our program in mathematics education. This evaluation can serve as a guide to reorientation of mathematics instruction in the schools.
