As one more indication of the resurgence of interest in school law, Newton Edwards has revised his classic work The Courts and the Public Schools. A pioneer in creating a consciousness of the importance of educators understanding the legal framework within which they operate, Professor Edwards wrote the first edition in 1933. The 1955 volume has the same expressed purposes as the older one: "(1) to make clear the fundamental principles underlying the relation of the state to education; (2) to reduce to systematic organization the principles of the case or common law which are applicable to practical problems of school organization and administration." This reviewer believes that both purposes have been achieved admirably. The more than 600 pages of text constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the law of public schools as revealed in court decisions.
