The urgency of this need is increased by the fact that educational and research foundations have apparently decided not to subsidize social science research in this most important area of contemporary social change in American society. Research in desegregation during the past two or three years has been restricted to that which could be done by individuals with the limited resources, time, and help which could be provided by their own initiative or by the limited funds of a few social agencies or educational institutions.
