John Puckett has written an immensely satisfying book. Foxfire Reconsidered is the first comprehensive and scholarly account of the famous program begun by high school teacher Eliot Wigginton in 1966 in the mountains of north Georgia. Initially started as a way for Wigginton to interest insouciant adolescents in learning (and as an enlightened way to control the classroom clamor, I might add), Foxfire has grown into a multifaceted educational enterprise that reaches out around the country and the world. At its core is the activity of “cultural journalism”: Students armed with tape recorders, notepads, and cameras go out into the community, interview local people about the lore and practices of the southern Appalachian highlands, and then write up their experiences for Foxfire magazine.
