In the last several decades a growing body of historical studies on the education of Mexican Americans has appeared. Two distinct approaches with varying degrees of empirical evidence are discernible in this recent historiography. One of these approaches is institutionally based and focuses on what schools have done to or for Chicano children. The second approach shifts the focus of scholarly interest away from the institution toward the minority members themselves and interprets the Chicanoís quest for educational equality. Gonzalezís book is a significant contribution to the first approach. This book provides a historical analysis of the theory and practice of segregated schooling for children of Mexican descent in the United States from 1900 to 1950. It examines the social science and educational theories that provided the foundations for segregated schooling and explores several aspects of this educational experience.
