Pallas is at once a thoughtful and comprehensive account of the manner in which we have viewed the problems and the education of disadvantaged children and a persuasive plea for a more extensive and fundamental approach to a rapidly increasing challenge.
The book has several virtues. First, its point of departure is a sophisticated and comprehensive definition of educational disadvantage that accounts for but surpasses familiar definitions. The authors see disadvantage stemming from insufficient educational experience in any and all of three domains-the school, the family, and the communityrather than in any one. As they point out, such a definition calls attention to the possibility of continuing deficiencies and the need for continued solutions as students mature, and it helps in identifying sources of variation in the disadvantaged population.
