Though the work of a living and active author, this publication must be regarded as the belated issue of an English version of a classic. The book marks a decisive stage in the development of a system of ideas which has since become well known in the English speaking world through its exposition in a comprehensive treatise. If Professor Mises's Human Action (published in English in 1949 and preceded by a German version of 1940) must be regarded as the definitive statement of his views, the distinctive features of his notions of the nature of social science have found their freshest expression in the present series of essays, dating from 1928 to 1933 and first issued together in German in the latter year—which also marked the end of his opportunity to publish in Germany.
