Subtitling his essay-review "A Moderate's Look at Reading Instruction" Dr. Clymer finds that reading texts, like "every boy and every gal who's born into this world alive? are either little liberals or little conservatives—with one exception which doesn't please him much. A specialist in reading on the faculty of education at the University of Minnesota and President-elect of the International Reading Association, Dr. Clymer reports that the way of a moderate is far from easy in the extremist forests of reading instruction. Recently, at an in-service meeting, I asked a friend how the school year was progressing. Without a moment's hesitation came her reply: "I'm like an asthmatic mouse in a ragweed maze." This teacher's efforts to maintain her equilibrium in a demanding and changing school setting are very similar to those of any conscientious educator in trying to keep up with current viewpoints, research reports, new materials, soothsaying, pronouncements, and...
