This book was written especially to provide teachers with a short text on measurement and evaluation. The authors believe, as they put it, that a teacher cannot be highly effective without being a good evaluator and that one of the most serviceable of evaluating devices is a good test. To reach this objective, the authors have provided succinct discussions of the role of measurement in instruction, standardized tests of achievement and capacity, norms, and the construction and use of tests by the teacher. In addition, they have treated the problems of identifying overachievers and underachievers, grouping, marking, and interpreting test data to parents. Finally, they have described the essentials of an adequate testing program and illustrated the computation of the mean, the median, the standard deviation, and stanine scores.
