Lancelot Hogben's book is an entertaining one, attempting "to show how the best use can be made of our hybrid linguistic heritage," and how language learners "can minimize the tedium of memorisation." Mrs. Palmer's translation of Elements de linguistique generate is a very different sort of book: it "initiates the reader into the concepts and procedures of descriptive and structural linguistics and deals successively with its main branches: phonetics, phonemics and morphemics." The Mother Tongue is a popularization; Elements is a work directed towards the student. Their purposes being incommensurable, they must be examined separately. Mr. Hogben has divided his book into eight chapters, each of which is followed by a series of exercises, diagrams and "language museums"; in the case of Chapter 3 ("The Limitations of the Latin Letters"), the quizzes run on for no less than 23 pages, and the grand total of the eight quiz sections is 114 pages—surely...
