University of Wisconsin-Madison E-mail Author WALTER C. STERN is assistant professor of Educational Policy Studies and of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work focuses on the historical intersection of race and education in the United States. His first book, Race and Education in New Orleans: Creating the Segregated City, 1764-1960 (LSU Press, 2018), examines how schools shaped New Orleans's racial order and urban landscape from the colonial period through the Jim Crow era. He is currently working on a book project exploring the intertwined histories of school desegregation and mass incarceration.
