Conceptualizing Classroom Management

The expression "school must keep" connotes much the same sense of obligation and dedication as "the mail must go through" and "the show must go on." It implies that at some particular time a contingent of children or youth will assemble at a particular place and that someone will have to be there to assume responsibility for what they do and for what happens to them. In an earlier century, the responsible someone might have been called a schoolmaster or "schoolmarm," and the function performed would have been"school-keeping."
