JOANNE LEE, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The main focus of her research is on early childhood learning in language and mathematics. Learning in both home and child care settings and through technology and traditional play are examined. She also studies monolingual vs. bilingual learners and children with special learning needs (e.g., visual impairment). She has been partnering with the Ontario Early Years Centres and the public libraries in the Waterloo region on research as well as on program creation and delivery. She is also involved in a partnership with an educational software company to develop evidence-based games for young learners. She is a co-developer of LittleCounters®, an evidence-based program that teaches parents and early childhood educators how to incorporate early numeracy concepts into children’s playtime through the use of daily routines, songs, games, stories, and movements. She also co-authors a resource book called “Let’s talk about Math: The LittleCounters® approach to building early math skills”.
