This book is engagingly and succinctly written. It's fun to read. It should serve as an excellent introduction to what linguistics is about. It is not technical. It is not a book on grammar. It serves to establish a broad and powerful definition for the linguistic enterprise which enterprise would change the traditional approach to language instruction. The book is so written as to expand the viewpoint of the reader regarding the pervasive influence of language on the individual. Anyone reading the book should become more interested in language. At least one of the chapters, perhaps the one on semantics, should lead the reader to continue reading and exploring in the fascinating area of language. The authors do a service by skillfully bringing in the appropriate work and ideas of some of the great linguistic workers. The suggestion is clear.
