The literature of social psychology is rapidly becoming a very large one, despite the fact that social psychology is, relatively speaking, a newcomer discipline in the realm of social science. The Handbook of Social Psychology, last published in 1954, occupied two large volumes; the edition that is currently in preparation will occupy no fewer than five. It seems clear, then, that more than ever before an introductory textbook must be selective in its treatment of the discipline. It can deal with a few representative topics in depth or it can present a rapid survey of all or most of the field-but the choice must be made. The survey approach has been taken by most introductory textbook writers in social psychology, and is taken in Professor Hollander's new book. In my opinion, this approach is very undesirable, for reasons I shall give below. Like other observers of the human scene, social scientists... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
