When two authors write and publish a book in spite of their own expressed concern about its timeliness, then the reader has reason to expect a forceful treatment of their point of view. So it is with the book under review. Bereiter and Engelmann are strongly convinced that preschool education for disadvantaged children must be radically different from what has gone on in the past, and they have set down in great detail their recommendations for achieving this difference. From the outset, the authors are careful to define and present a rationale for their proposed new kind of preschool. Thus they raise and examine very pertinent questions, e.g. "On what basis does one decide what to teach in the preschools?" "How should it be taught?" "At what rate?" "How do the neglected things get learned." They recount some significant experiences with traditional nursery school programs and personnel. They examine and assess data...
