How Children Learn Aesthetic Responses

A great many discussions of the psychology of the arts, and of their appropriate pedagogical and curricular treatment, are vitiated by an extreme vagueness. They center about no clear and explicit conception of what the art experience is. This leads to conclusions infected with mysticism, which are, to say the least, dubious in theory and often mischievous in practice. There is, however, no necessity for this, since the aesthetic response, considered directly as a phenomenon of human behavior, has reasonably clear-cut characteristics. These must be understood before there can be an intelligent approach to the problem of how this type of response is acquired.
