Language and Composition: Some "New" Rhetorical Perspectives

by Gene L. Piché - 1970

The present chapter is limited to reviewing representative sources or perspectives contributing to a new or revised theory. Although the relationship of that theory to instruction is considered, the intent is to survey newer sources of knowledge rather than to detail specific curricular applications. Functioning more as inventory than blueprint, the chapter begins by contrasting the "old" theory of rhetoric with the much reduced theory of "composition" inherited from the last century. It continues by contrasting that narrowly practical theory of composition with aspects of a newer macrorhetorical theory implied in modern studies of language and communication and in the critical theories of I.A. Richards, Kenneth Burke, and Richard Weaver. From the larger domain of macrorhetoric, the chapter proceeds to summarize representative contributions to a new and developing microrhetoric of the English sentence and paragraph. It concludes with a discussion of new emphases in the rhetoric-composition curriculum, marked by recognition of the intimate relation of language and thought and by new respect for the personal and social correlates of composition as communication.
