This is a teacher’s book for teachers and their teachers. Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon, once an English teacher and now an assistant professor of education at the University of Chicago, explores the role interpretive discussion can play in finding answers to some of the questions that most worry and stimulate us: How can teachers convey high expectations to every student, no matter how alienated or discouraged? How do we persuade students to “transform themselves,” reaching far into knowledge almost wholly unfamiliar to them, and bringing out of it their own understandings? The author (“SHG” is what she calls herself as we hear her speak in the dozens of conversations that make up most of the book) spent three months with two English classes and their teachers: one tenth-grade class at the “Chalmers School,” an integrated day school; the other a special education class of about a dozen students in the same age group...
