Introduction: The Work of Staff Development by Gary A. Griffin - 1983The functions of this introductory chapter are fourfold. First, the timeliness of a yearbook on staff development in schools is discussed from several vantage points including professional, organizational, and societal ones. Second, the premise that staff development is a central function of school maintenance and improvement is advanced. Third, staff development as work is argued from a set of overarching premises which emerge, in large part, from subsequent chapters in this yearbook. The chapter concludes with a brief introduction to the remainder of the volume. To view the full-text for this article you must be signed-in with the appropriate membership.
