Evaluation in the Ecology of Schooling: The Process of School Renewal

It will be argued here that reconceptualizing and reconstructing what we mean by evaluation is the most viable course of action if we are to capitalize upon the view and reality of schools as cultural ecosystems. My proposal will probably be seep at once as both radical and tame. It will be radical in that, taken as a whole, the conditions and practices to be advocated do not generally exist—even to a modest degree—in American schools. Yet the proposal will be tame in that it requires nothing not already present in our human and technological resources. This is not to minimize, however, what will be required—namely a fundamental realignment of beliefs, values, and priorities, and the dollars that go with it.
