Coherence, Assessment, and Challenging Content

This chapter is about assessments for K-12 students required by institutions outside of school—federal, state, and local governments. The standardized tests previously required by Chapter 1 under the 1988 Hawkins-Stafford Amendments and state-required assessments are illustrations. We are not concerned here with the teacher-generated, day-to-day assessments carried out in classrooms as part of the everyday curriculum and pedagogy. One exception is an assessment required by a government that may use the products of testing by individual teachers as part of its assessment (products found in portfolios, for example).
