The Role of the State

by George A. Antonelli & Richard L. Thompson - 1997

What is the state's role in service learning programs? How can states influence the numbers of students participating while ensuring that the service learning experience is beneficial? How can states ensure that teachers and others who have direct contact with students have the knowledge they need to guide service learning experiences? These are among the questions addressed in this chapter. In exploring answers to these questions, we emphasize one key concept that is central to the issue of the state's role in service learning. We believe it is in the compelling interest of the state for students to be involved in service learning because they will be better citizens for their involvement. The level of support by the state may vary, depending on economics and philosophy, but the state's commitment to service learning should not vary.
