ELLEN S. MARKOWITZ is the principal of SuperStarters Consulting. She works with professional and nonprofit organizations on sports-based youth development, coaching and professional development, nonprofit organizations, performance, and leadership. Her research interests include youth development in out-of-school time, particularly in sports and mentoring programs, with a focus on connectedness and competence in adolescent girls. She completed her Ph.D. in 2010 at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education in applied developmental science with a focus on sport psychology and positive youth development through sports.

NANCY L. DEUTSCH is associate professor of educational leadership and foundations at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and program director for methodology at Youth-NEX, the UVA Center to Promote Effective Youth Development. Her research focuses on out-of-school settings for adolescents. In addition to articles in journals, including Journal of Adolescent Research and Journal of Early Adolescence, she has published two books, Pride in the Projects: Teens Building Identities in Urban Contexts (NYU Press, 2008) and Youth Organizations and Positive Youth Development: Case Studies of Success and Failure (Cambridge University Press, 2011), coauthored with Bart Hirsch and David DuBois. The latter won a Society for Research on Adolescence book award in 2011.

EDITH "WINX" LAWRENCE is a professor in the Curry Program in clinical and school psychology at the University of Virginia and director of the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP). Her research interests and publications focus on a competence approach to adolescent and family development. In addition to the development of YWLP’s weekly mentoring curriculum that focuses on enhancing girls’ sense of self and leadership, she also has developed the Family Inventory of Resources and Stressors, a comprehensive assessment measure for professionals working with families experiencing multiple problems.
