DAVID J. SHERNOFF is an associate professor of educational psychology at Northern Illinois University whose research interests include student motivation and engaging learning environments, engagement in educational video games, and mentoring. Recent publications include, “Engagement and positive youth development: Creating optimal learning environments” for the recent (2012) APA Educational Psychology Handbook, and his forthcoming book, Optimal Learning Environments to Promote Student Engagement (Springer).

JANINE BEMPECHAT is a professor of psychology and human development at Wheelock College whose research interests include achievement motivation and academic success in low income students, and ethnic, cultural, and family influences in the development of achievement beliefs. Recent publications include “Parental influences in achievement motivation and school engagement” (with D.S. Shernoff) for the recent (2012) Handbook of Research on Student Engagement and “Learning together: The educational experiences of adolescents in Moscow” (with A. Mirny, J. Li, K. Wenk, and S.
